On January 23rd, VOOR had the privilege of hosting Dalibor Žorko, the Head Coach of the Belgrade Football Association, in an insightful webinar. A pioneer in Serbian football, Žorko shared his inspiring journey, the challenges facing youth football, and how VOOR is helping to revolutionize the sport in Serbia.
Dalibor Žorko: From Inspiration to Leadership
Dalibor Žorko’s coaching journey began with inspiration from Serbian football legend Bora Milutinović, the only coach to lead five different nations in five FIFA World Cups. After reading Milutinović’s book and meeting him in person, Žorko was motivated to pursue a career in coaching, starting with a youth academy. His mission has since expanded to driving innovation and growth in Serbian football.
“We share a lot of passion about football here in Serbia,” Žorko said during the webinar. However, with declining youth participation and fewer spectators in stadiums, Žorko is focused on bringing football back into schools and communities. Through groundbreaking work in coach education and youth programs, he is reshaping how football is taught and experienced in Serbia.
The Challenges of Youth Football
One of the key challenges discussed was adapting to the changing mindset of young players. “Youth today want to follow their own rules,” Žorko explained, emphasizing the need for modern coaching methods that balance structure with creativity.
Žorko also highlighted the growing competition among sports in Serbia, making it even more essential to engage young players and show them why football remains a unique and exciting opportunity.
